There have been a number of changes made to Call of Duty over the years with new modes and ways to play coming and going. One of the most popular game modes has been Zombies, but Infinity Ward made the decision to cancel their zombies project for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. Instead of a zombie game mode, they added in a co-op mode along with the campaign and multiplayer offerings. While ditching the zombie project led to a more cohesive game world, it would have been interesting to see how it could have looked.

So why isn’t there a zombies mode in Modern Warfare? In a post by PlayStation Lifestyle, Jacob Minkoff, the single player design director at Infinity Ward stated that the developer was “trying to create an authentic, realistic feeling world. We don’t have the flexibility to do something like put zombies in the game. That would compromise the feeling of playing in a world that feels realistic and authentic and relative to today’s conflicts and things we face.”

Recently, Aaron Beck, the concept artist for the zombies mode, was granted permission to share some artwork that was used in early production for the zombies storyline. On his Instagram post, it was hinted that the storyline would revolve around the Russian Special Forces, and the timeline seems to be a bit futuristic. There are robots that seem to be keeping soldier zombies in check, so that the zombies don’t spread the infection and can be used for other purposes. The nuclear power plant in the background could have been the reason for the outbreak, according to the teaser, but we will never know as the project was canceled in the starting stages.

If you followed Treyarch’s Call Of Duty Zombies storyline, then you know how action-packed and story-driven the game mode was for fans. Personally, I think that only Treyarch has been able to create the best zombies experience to date. All the other Call of Duty zombies games have felt disappointing, whether it be because of gameplay or story. We don’t know what Treyarch Studios will be working on for their next game, but it won’t be the same without director Jason Blundell supervising the team.

So, what are your thoughts on the artwork for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Zombies? Do you think the game mode would have any potential without Treyarch Studios being involved? Personally, I think it looks interesting, but with Infinity Ward’s record of making disappointing zombie games, it was a good decision to cancel it.
