Five Nights At Freddy’s: Sister Location is here, and the post-release theories are starting to swirl. Now that most of the game’s story has been seen, fans have gone out on a limb to solve the lore. Not everything has been explained right now, but here are five popular ideas that have rejuvenated the community.

Story SPOILERS are coming. Those that don’t want to know the endings and narrative details should turn back now!

1) The Afton Plot: Probably the most popular Sister Location theory is that the player takes control of the Purple Guy, also known as William Afton. Preceding each night are small clips from a little girl begging the man to get closer to Baby and the ice cream she makes. In true Five Nights At Freddy’s fashion, however, the metallic entertainer malfunctions and kills the child.

Several years later, Afton goes to Sister Location to make peace with the tragic events. It’s at this point that Baby and her robotic friends take the opportunity to trap Afton, scoop his body and fill it with a vengeful animatronic soul, Ennard, made by parts of all the characters. This explains Afton’s need to kill in the previous Five Nights At Freddy’s games. This idea is seemingly solidified when Baby asks the player “isn’t this why you came here.” William's daughter possesses Baby and knows of her father’s restlessness. If the good “fake” ending is completed, William sits at home while Ennard enters the room. Assumingly, Afton has won the spirit of his daughter back.

2) The Immortal And The Restless: After each of Sister Location’s nights, players watch a funny soap opera on their TV called The Immortal And The Restless. It basically tells the story of a vampire trying to make a life with a daughter that isn’t his. In the end, the couple finds themselves contemplating divorce.

With enough time to reflect, a popular theory is that these cutscenes actually parallel Afton’s relationship with his wife following the death of his daughter. That’s why he comes home after his miserable day of work to watch such a silly show. He relates to it. It’s assumed that after the accident Afton and his wife struggle to work past their differences and eventually get a divorce. William sees himself as a vampire for having allowed the bloody deed to happen.

3) The Link To Other FNAF Stories: So, assuming some of the above theories are true, fans may have a few questions about established Five Nights At Freddy’s lore from the games and books. As fanatics probably know, the Purple Guy becomes Springtrap at the end of the first game, and that event is fully shown in Five Nights At Freddy’s 3.

'Five Nights At Freddy's: Sister Location' tells us that Springtrap may, in fact, be an animatronic inside an animatronic. The latest theories contribute to the established lore.

If that’s true, however, how does that work given what we know about Sister Location? The running theory is that Afton essentially becomes an animatronic inside an animatronic. It explains why the employee is specifically fired for odor towards the end of that first game. Rotting flesh can’t smell too good.

4) You Play As Henry: Of course, as with any good theory, there’s always a counterpoint. There are certain pieces of evidence that make the connection to Afton a bit tenuous. After all, we know Sister Location takes place at an establishment called Afton Robotics. Why would its former owner decide to take a low-paying job at a place he owns? Why does Baby not recognize her own father at the beginning of the game?

The main solution, of course, is that we instead play as Henry, the co-owner of Fazbear Entertainment from the Silver Eyes book. We know he has an accident with an animatronic, and it would explain some of those above plots. Henry made lots of animatronics for his daughter, Charlotte. Maybe he returned because he feels guilty about what Baby did.

5) A Cool Tidbit About Baby’s Eyes: This only hints at a small Sister Location story detail, but it’s worth pointing out. Players can actually see “Afton’s” daughter’s death by completing an 8-bit death mini-game towards the end of the experience. However, in that flashback, Baby has blue eyes. In the main Sister Location game, her eyes are green. What might this tell us?

Dawko’s working theory is that, after the incident, the possessed blue endoskeleton was scrapped and replaced with the green one. When do we see the blue again? In Ennard’s face at the end of the game. When making the monster, the animatronics maybe used the dispatched, disgruntled skeleton for its head.

Five Nights At Freddy’s: Sister Location is available now on PC.
