Final Fantasy 14 was released originally in 2010. However due mainly to negative reception, Square Enix made the decision to shut down the servers and re-release it as Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn in 2013. Since then the game has had three major expansions with Heavensward, Stormblood, and Shadowbringers. Shadowbringers in particular introduced two new races with the Viera and Hrothgar.

In today's guide, we take a closer look at the Hrothgar.

So what are the Hrothgar? Well, they are a race that come from Ilsabard. If you prefer to play big and strong characters, then the Hrothgar is the one for you. Indeed, they are not only imposing, but also dignified. In terms of lore, early meetings with Hrothgar typically ended in conflict. This is mainly because of their appearance and aggravated by the fact that they weren't able to communicate in the common tongue. To their credit, they managed to learn the common language and were able to put to rest the fears of the people. Since then, the race has been welcome in all areas of Hydaelyn.

Here's the thing, if you think the race is familiar, then you're not wrong. The Horthgar are inspired by none other than the Ronso race in Final Fantasy X. This is why in the alternate dimension known as The First, they are called Ronso.

In the game, you get to play two kinds of Hrothgar:

  • Helions
    • Helions live in Southern Ilsabard with their respective tribes.
    • They are devoted to their queens and have been known to devote their entire lives to serving their monarch.
    • While Helions are generally known to keep to themselves, they have since started to go out and explore the rest of the world.
  • The Lost
    • Unlike the Helions, these Hrothgar are not bound to any monarch or queen.
    • With no ruler, they mainly practice a nomadic lifestyle.
    • They have taken up professions that match their lifestyle, like peddlers and mercenaries.

So the question is, when can you play a Hrothgar? First, you need to have Shadowbringers in order to be able to play this race. If you want to use Hrothgar, even at the beginning, there is a way. All you need to do is get the Complete Edition. With this you can play the race starting with A Realm Reborn and moving forward to Heavensward, Stromblood, and Shadowbringers.

If you already have a character in the game, there is a way to change it to a Horthgar by using a Phial of Fantasia. Actually, you can pretty much change into any race with this item.

Are you ready to give this new race a shot?
