The Callisto Protocol, the latest game by Dead Space creator, is now out on all platforms. Horror fans have been keeping a keen eye on the title as there aren’t many scary sci-fi games in the industry. So, we take whatever we can get.

User Score

Unfortunately, Glen Schofield’s latest offering isn’t doing so hot, and I mean specifically the PC version. As of writing this article, The Callisto Protocol only has a 27% positive rating on Steam and is currently marked as “Mostly Negative.”

Technical Issues

The reason for such an abysmal user score is because of technical problems where several players encountered severe stuttering. Combine that with multiple crashes and low performance and you have the perfect recipe for a headache. No matter how good a game actually is, if it doesn’t run well, then what’s the point?

Causes of Technical Issues

The stuttering is caused by shader compilation issues, which is quite common in games developed using Unreal Engine 4. Some players are not too happy about the inclusion of Denuvo either. The game will require several patches to be in a playable state for PC users, so we recommend buying the game after a few months, assuming you haven’t bought the game already.

Critic Review

Setting technical issues aside, The Callisto Protocol has also failed to impress the critics. It currently sits at 76 User Metascore on Metacritic. That might not be a complete disaster but the score is also not what many fans expected. All three mainline Dead Space games have a higher Metascore, even DS3 — the weakest in the series.

Future

This won’t be the last you hear of The Callisto Protocol. The developer has already confirmed that a story expansion is planned and will be included in the Season Pass along with more stuff like new modes, death animations, and skins. More details about the upcoming content will be revealed at a later date.
