"Cyberpunk 2077" is seeing significant numbers in its player count this month on Steam, and it is quite surprising for a five-year-old game that has since faltered in concurrent players over the years.
However, there are speculations as to why there is a sudden rise in its player count, and it may be because of Netflix and CD Projekt Red's series adaptation, "Cyberpunk: Edgerunners."
Recently, Netflix announced that the prequel series to "Cyberpunk 2077" is getting a second season, much to the delight of fans who have been waiting for more from the adaptation since 2022.
'Cyberpunk 2077' Player Count Sees Notable Rise
New data from SteamDB showed a significant and surprising move for "Cyberpunk 2077" as it recently reached a peak player count of 66,000 on July 6. This was an unusual peak for "Cyberpunk 2077" as the last time it did so was in February, according to the data, making this a significant development for the dystopian open-world game.
In the past months, the famed RPG from CD Projekt Red saw an average player count of 30,00 to 40,000 concurrent users logging in and playing the game, which is around 50% less than its recent peak. While "Cyberpunk 2077's" player count is lower compared to when it was first released, the game is still staying strong with its average numbers.
Based on the data gathered by SteamDB, "Cyberpunk 2077" once saw an all-time peak player count of 1,054,388 players around its release period, and it has not achieved these numbers since. Nevertheless, seeing it peak five years later is an incredible feat for "Cyberpunk," especially as it is receiving fewer updates and fewer new content from its developers.
That being said, "Cyberpunk 2077" is not yet a forgotten game as it is set to receive its upcoming update sometime in the coming weeks, and CD Projekt Red has been rumored to be working on its sequel.
Could It Be Due to Netflix's 'Edgerunners 2'?
GameRant reported that there is one possible reason why "Cyberpunk 2077's" Steam PC player count saw a rise, and it may be because of the Netflix series, "Cyberpunk: Edgerunners," getting a second season.
During the early days of "Cyberpunk 2077," it received mixed reactions and reviews from fans, particularly as it fell short in several points in the story and saw technical difficulties in its run on consoles. However, Netflix and CD Projekt Red's collaboration on a series adaptation became a smash hit on the streaming platform and among "Cyberpunk" fans when it released in 2022.
It was believed that the prequel series is only a limited release from Netflix and CD Projekt Red. Additionally, it has been three years since the show aired on Netflix, which made the announcement for a second season a significant surprise for fans.
