StarCraft 2: Legacy of the Void, the final StarCraft 2 expansion, is available now. And the game is an instant success: It sold more than a million copies in its first 24 hours, a better record than Heart of the Swarm, and all the more impressive considering the game was going head to head with Fallout 4 and Rise of the Tomb Raider. Those sales bode well for another project that Blizzard has lately spoken of explicitly for the first time in years: Warcraft 4. But don’t get your hopes too high: Whatever Blizzard decides, we won’t know about it for years.

Warcraft 4 Rumors: Don’t Expect To Hear Any For Years

A few months back, Blizzard officially put Warcraft 4 on the table. What once was a far-off rumor was now in semi-semi-official consideration as the company’s next project after StarCraft 2. Now, don’t get too excited: That doesn’t mean it’s happening. It just means that the game is officially on Blizzard’s shortlist of potential projects once StarCraft 2 is well and properly done, once the DLC is out, once enough patches and balance issues have been dealt with, so that the StarCraft 2 team can move on to the next project.

Warcraft 4 may well be that next project, which Blizzard has alluded to. They’re considering the title. But think about Blizzard. The company does not characteristically have loose lips. We knew that they were working on the MMO Titan for a long time, but that was literally all we knew about the project, now deceased and sort-of reborn as Overwatch, for many years. And even then, people were disappointed, because what they imagined they wanted was cancelled. Blizzard is secretive for a reason.

So, even if Blizzard does decide to do Warcraft 4 next—which seems entirely reasonable, since World of Warcraft is in deep decline, StarCraft 2 is done and the team behind it is, well, a team that’s great at making RTS games—we won’t be told about it. It will happen in secret, for three, four, five years, until Blizzard is ready to unveil a nearly complete version of the game. It won’t be a quick project, and it will have to compete with wherever MOBAs end up half a decade from now. It’s a tall order, and Blizzard can do it, but we won’t be privy to it for a long, long time.
