Star Trek Online Won’t Support Windows 7 Beginning February Next Year

There’s some bad news for PC players of Star Trek Online. The developers announced that support on Windows 7, as well as Direct3D Feature Level 10, will end effective February 15, 2022.

In a post, Julia “Nitocris83” Fredrickson of Cryptic Studios said that this move was done to improve game performance as well as optimize the player experience. She added that this is projected to help the game’s future development.

To ensure quality gameplay is continued, players need to upgrade to at least Windows 8. For the best experience, it’s recommended to shift to Windows 10.

That’s not all since players also need to have a video card that supports Direct3D Feature Level 11.0 or better. These include:

  • Nvidia GeForce GTX 400 or better
  • ATI/AMD Radeon HD 5000 or better
  • Intel HD Graphics 4000 or better

So what will happen if a player doesn’t decide to upgrade? According to Fredrickson, when they launch the game, they’re going to be informed of the upcoming incompatibility. This will start in November 2021.

Once the deadline arrives, players who can’t meet the updated requirements get a pop-up over the launcher indicating incompatibility. Once the player clicks OK, the launcher then closes automatically. Essentially it means that the player won’t be able to log in without upgrading.

PC Update

Speaking of the PC version, an update has been released which resolves these issues:

  • Improved the Biomler Effect Personal Space Trait increasing its chance to trigger from 2.5% to 17.5%.
  • Some abilities that Teleport the player to a Foe's location will no longer function on the I.S.S. Tigris.
  • Updated Lower Decks Personal Space Trait icons colors to be consistent with all Space Traits.
  • Addressed inconsistent naming of the ground trait, "Space Explorer is a Great Gig."
  • Resolved an issue that was preventing the icon for these items to properly appear:
    • Space Trait: Improvised Boarding Party

    • Ground Trait: Space Explorer is a Great Gig
