Developer Frogwares has just showcased a new trailer and developer overview for their upcoming action-adventure and detective game Sherlock Holmes: Chapter One. Titled “World Overview”, the almost two minute trailer showcases the game’s beautiful Mediterranean setting, its plot involving the famous detective’s origins, and more.

Narrated by Sergey Oganesyan, Producer and Community Manager at Frogwares, the trailer starts off by introducing us to the game, which is basically the origin story of Sherlock Holmes. Sherlock Holmes: Chapter One will have players going controlling the young Sherlock and take on his very first case. Set in a Mediterranean island near the end of the 19th century, Oganesyan describes the location as a place that “seems like paradise, with colorful scenery, fascinating architecture, and exotic people. It is a world full of rich history, places of interest to uncover, and mysteries to untangle.” Soon enough, though, the player discovers what the island really is: filled with inequality, crime, and the strangest cases to uncover and solve.

Frogwares also provided more detail regarding Sherlock Holmes: Chapter One's gameplay. First off, Antonina Melnykova, the Lead Narrative Designer of Sherlock Holmes: Chapter One, said that the game will take approximately 15 hours to complete while a completionist playthrough would be closer to a 30 to 40-hour experience. There will be five main quests and 30 side quests, each of varying size, complexity, and requiring moral choices to be made. Melnykova also emphasized that each quest will have several suspects, and that choosing the right or the wrong one will not matter as much, since you will still be able to decide their fate.

Deciding on the culprit still depends on your moral compass, as abiding by the law will always be different from serving justice. Finally, Lead Feature Designer Yaroslav Martyniuk expounded more on the game’s open-world aspect and explained its combat system. He said that the combat will only take place when it is justified by the story. Most of the time, players will only be able to use non-lethal methods, but if forced, Sherlock will be able to use firearms to kill attackers.

Sherlock Holmes: Chapter One is set to launch for current and next-gen consoles and PC in 2021.
