RollerCoaster Tycoon is back, better than ever, and can fit in your pocket. Called RollerCoaster Tycoon Classic, this game for iOS and Android devices takes the best of RollerCoaster Tycoon and RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 and makes it touch-screen compatible.
If you’ve ever played a RollerCoaster Tycoon game before, you’ll know exactly what the deal is here. Players take control of an amusement park, and must complete a goal within a set timeframe. Goals typically revolve around having a certain number of guests in the park or a certain rating within a given period of time, so it’s up to the player to keep improving on the amusement park so guests stay longer and come back.
All of the features of the original RollerCoaster Tycoon games are here, like the ability to build custom coasters, buy more land to expand your park and even alter the terrain to make things easier to build. It seriously is a perfect port of the PC games.
That being said, there are a few slight drawbacks in the transition from a computer monitor to your phone or tablet. The game can feel a little cramped at times, and you’ll find yourself clicking on things you didn’t intend to, simply because it’s hard to fit everything in. This isn’t that big of an issue, and I never found myself accidentally making major errors or doing anything that wasn’t easily fixable. I am also playing on a Galaxy S7, so playing on a bigger phone or a tablet would probably be even better.
It’s also possible for the framerate to chug at times, especially if you have a lot of guests in your park. Again, this isn’t too too much of a concern, especially considering that RollerCoaster Tycoon isn’t exactly the kind of game you need to be running at 60fps to get the full experience.
Additionally, I’ve had one or two crashes while playing. Thankfully, this didn’t disrupt my game too much, but future updates could help smooth out any hiccups people may experience.
While it may seem like RollerCoaster Tycoon Classic has a bit of a high price tag for a mobile game at $5.99, it is nice to see no ads while playing that you might accidentally click on or that could slow down your game. You can even play offline this way, meaning my subway rides are about to get much more thrilling.
If the 95 included scenarios aren’t enough for you, there are also already three different DLC packs as well. The Wacky Worlds pack features 17 new scenarios from all over the world, the Time Twister pack has 14 scenarios based on historical and fantasy-themed locations and the Toolkit pack allows for you to create custom scenarios, features a Ride Designer to make roller coasters outside of a campaign and the ability to share your scenarios with friends, or import new scenarios from RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 on PC.
If you are missing that classic RollerCoaster Tycoon feeling, RollerCoaster Tycoon Classic has it for you in spades. A near-flawless port of the PC classics, this is a must-get for any fan who wants to build the coaster of his or her dreams.
