Just in time for Star Wars Day, we got to see one of the best Star Wars games have a proper digital release.

The original Star Wars Battlefront is now available for purchase via Steam and GOG, a move which is an overall part of the May the Fourth (Star Wars Day) promotion. Battlefront is offered for less than $9 at both stores, so if you consider yourself to be a fan at all of the Battlefront games, get them while they’re cheap.

The original Star Wars Battlefront and Battlefront 2 were beloved titles by the community, particularly because of its inclusion of large-scale epic battles across settings and locations in the Star Wars universe. I still, to this day, occasionally play Battlefront 2, and I am of the opinion that it is one of the best multiplayer games of all time. Not to knock on EA and DICE’s take on the titles – though I’m sure they’ve been knocked more than they would like – but their Battlefront series is only superior to Pandemic Studios’ take because of its graphical and visual improvements over the course of the decade. In every other area though – gameplay, character variation, locations, replayability, gunplay, hero mechanics, even the campaign story – Pandemic’s Battlefront series is better in every way. The worst part is that their planned Battlefront 3 never came to fruition, although I like to think that someday some dedicated fan will carry the torch and release it for everyone. One can hope.

In any case, the release of this Battlefront is the first time the game has been made available for an online marketplace. This means that you need an actual working multiplayer in order to get the fullest experience. While its original GameSpy servers went down back in 2014, some very dedicated fans have found workarounds which are very easy to implement. For more details, you can follow this guide if you bought the Steam version of Pandemic’s Battlefront.

If you’re on a console, you’re out of luck for these titles, however, some other Star Wars titles are still available to play for Xbox users. Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens is available for $10 or $15 for the Deluxe Edition; EA and DICE’s Battlefront 2 is only $7.50, and the 2015 release of Battlefront (Ultimate Edition) can be bought for $5.
