Nintendo NX Update: Top-Secret Plans, Copycat Worries Kept The Console Away From E3

Nintendo held its annual shareholders meeting late Tuesday night and while there was a lot of information, one comment from Shigeru Miyamoto about the NX’s absence at E3 this year has received a lot of attention.

According to multiple sources at the meeting, when the board of directors were asked about any developmental problems with the NX, Miyamoto commented, “Normally we would’ve shown the #NX at #E3, but we didn’t. We’re worried about imitators if we release info too early.”

Many believe Miyamoto was speaking about how the Wii “inspired” Sony and Microsoft’s future consoles. With the NX set to release in March 2017, Nintendo doesn’t want to tip their hand as to what they may be up to (and it may be big).

There are plenty of rumors regarding the NX, from returning to cartridges to mobile and handheld linking, and in a recent interview with the Associated Press , Miyamoto spoke more about why Nintendo is being secretive regarding the console.

“In terms of NX, there’s an idea that we’re working on. That’s why we can’t share anything at this point, and I don’t want to comment on the other companies. If it was just a matter of following advancements in technology, things would be coming out a lot quicker.”

At E3 2016, iDigitalTimes asked Charlie Scibetta, senior director of corporate communications for Nintendo of America, why the NX was absent. He attributed it to timing.

“When it comes to going more in-depth about NX we decided to have that closer to the ship date, so sometime between now and then we will start rolling out more information. But for this show, we really wanted to focus on this one game and build the best experience for that,” Scibetta told iDigi. “In terms of why we did that and our thought process, for this show for this game we wanted to to go big on [ Zelda ]. And for NX we’ll talk about that in other ways as we get closer to launch, it just wasn't going to be at this show for us.”

So what do you think of this “idea” that the NX will have? Do you think Nintendo is being paranoid regarding the competition? Let us know in the comments section below.
