The next game from 4A Games is finally unveiled as "Metro 2039" is set to deliver its next main series entry in the franchise after several years.

In their latest showcase, 4A Games shared the main inspiration for this next "Metro" game, with the studio saying that it was "changed" by the Russia-Ukraine sociopolitical conflict.

'Metro 2039' Officially Revealed After 7 Years

The wait is finally over for fans of the post-apocalyptic shooter series as 4A Games and Deep Silver have officially revealed "Metro 2039," the fourth mainline entry in its iconic series franchise via the Xbox First Look program.

"Metro 2039" is written in collaboration with "Metro" novel series author Dmitry Glukhovsky, and it features a new protagonist called "The Stranger," whose shoes players will step into to navigate the game.

Here, players are thrust back into the post-apocalyptic city of Metro Moscow, where it has been overrun by a fascist regime. This is the first time that a "Metro" game protagonist will have their own voice.

The upcoming game will be unlike "Metro Exodus," where the game focused on leaving the conflicted city.

The new game is also bringing back the tunnels of Moscow and will focus on going back to its roots. Here, The Stranger has long been surviving on the city's surface but has been pushed to return underground.

"Metro 2039" is coming to the Xbox Series S and X, PlayStation 5, and PC this winter.

4A Games Say Russia-Ukraine War Inspired New Game

According to 4A Games, the development of "Metro 2039" is deeply personal to them as a Ukrainian studio, particularly as the team developed the game amidst the real-life conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

The studio's "Metro" games previously centered on preventing war, but that has since changed since Russia attacked Ukraine, which has now pushed them to talk about the consequences, said creative director Andriy "mLs" Shevchenko.

He added that "Metro 2039" now focuses on sending messages about "the consequences, the cost of silence, the horrors of tyranny, and the price of freedom."

Shevchenko said that the Russia-Ukraine war changed the lives of everyone in the studio, including their families. Glukhovsky shared that he is currently living in exile from Russia after his public criticism of his home country and denouncing the Ukraine invasion.

"Metro 2039" not only serves as the next mainline game of the franchise and 4A Games, but also a testament to the studio's experiences amid the real-life Russia and Ukraine war and the horrors it brings to people and the world.
