Lara Croft has been relatively silent for a few years. However, that will change soon with a new entry in the iconic franchise confirmed today. Crystal Dynamics, the developer of the upcoming game, announced it during the State of Unreal 2022 event that took place today.

Dallas Dickinson, Crystal Dynamics General Manager for the Tomb Raider franchise, revealed that the game will utilize Unreal Engine 5. It will be the first Tomb Raider to use this game engine.

"Our goal is to push the envelope of fidelity, and to deliver the high-quality, cinematic action-adventure experience that fans deserve from both Crystal Dynamics and the Tomb Raider franchise," Dickinson said.

No other information about the game was revealed. We don’t know the platform or release window of the title. We also don’t know if it will be another reboot or will it continue the story of Shadow of the Tomb Raider. We can do nothing but wait for more details.

Latest Franchise Moving to Unreal Engine 5

Tomb Raider is one of many famous franchises shifting toward Unreal Engine 5. Early this year, CD Projekt announced that the next Witcher game will utilize the said engine. The company made the move to streamline development. Using an already developed great engine removes the need to improve your in-house engine, which can hinder game development. The next entry in the Gears of War franchise is also expected to use UE5.

The Engine in Action

Unreal Engine 5 seems to be the most important video game engine right now. Ironically, we have yet to play a single AAA game running it. We have seen the engine in action though, in The Matrix Awakens Demo, which was released last year. It might not have been a complete game but it was playable, and it looked gorgeous. I can’t wait to see the engine in action in a proper video game.

So what do you think? Are you excited about the upcoming Tomb Raider game? Do you think moving to Unreal Engine 5 is the correct choice? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
