Developer White Owls, Inc. has announced yesterday through a Kickstarter update that their weird and quirky daily life RPG The Good Life will be delayed to a 2020 release.

The announcement comes from the original creator himself, who states that the delay comes from a long deliberation to extend the development period “in order to deliver The Good Life to all our backers in the best condition possible.” This reason is as good as any to deliver a finished and well-polished product, especially from a crowd as finnicky as backers on Kickstarter.

If you’re unaware, The Good Life is a very unique take on JRPGs, being that it features an American protagonist in a British town. The game is described as a ‘debt repayment daily life action adventure’ title, which is quite the mouthful and also a very intriguing concept for a game. From the outset, gameplay revolves around completing various tasks in order to earn money to pay off the main character's massive debt, which is something straight out of Animal Crossing.

In a way, it’s also weirdly parallel to Animal Crossing, despite its vastly different setting. The protagonist, Naomi, is a journalist, and to pay off her massive debt she takes on a job from a company in New York to move to the 'happiest town in the world’ and report on its happenings. Of course, not everything is as it seems, as it turns out that the town is hiding a rather bizarre secret – every month, all of the townspeople there turn into either a cat or a dog, including Naomi. See that weird parallel to Animal Crossing now?

The developers promise a hearty helping of mystery, horror, and good old charm with The Good Life, and honestly, I’m already sold after learning of the involvement of Yukio Futatsugi and his team. Futatsugi is best known as the creator of the Panzer Dragoon series, which are some of the best games I’ve ever played on the PlayStation 2 – a bit ironic, since it originally released for the Sega Saturn.

In any case, the announcement also came with an update post that showed much of the new changes made with the game’s development. You can check out the Kickstarter for The Good Life here.

The Good Life will be released for the PC and PlayStation 4 sometime in Spring 2020.
