E3 2019 has been a relatively quiet time all around for Sony and PlayStation, seeing as the gaming giant was notably absent for this year’s iteration of the biggest annual event for video games. That, however, did not stop them from delivering some surprise gameplay videos and other trailers on their YouTube channel, including Frozenbyte’s fourth iteration for their popular Trine series: Trine 4: The Nightmare Prince.

You can check out the gameplay footage for Trine 4: The Nightmare Prince down below to see a first look at how the game will play out.

For fans of the original series, this iteration is shaping up to be one of the most innovative yet. Trine 4: The Nightmare Prince features a new array of platforming puzzles, which you can beat in solo or in multiplayer co-op mode. For those unfamiliar, Trine lets you control three characters in a fantasy medieval setting: Zoya the Thief, who is armed with a bow and arrow, plus a grappling hook to traverse certain areas; Amadeus the Wizard, a sorcerer who can move objects as well as conjure up new objects that can be climbed on; and Pontius the Knight, a strong warrior who is generally the best when it comes to combat, armed with a sword and shield.

These three characters are conjoined in spirit by an artifact known as the Trine, which explains why you can only use one of them at a time; this makes for a very interesting and intuitive platform game where you must think creatively in order to complete certain levels. Trine 4: The Nightmare Prince showcases the new ways you can do this, including an added mechanic with Pontius and his shield. The Knight’s shield can be used to reflect light and redirect water to flowers, making them grow and interact with the environment. This opens up new areas to explore.

Multiplayer also makes a return, and is demonstrated in the gameplay footage. Players can shift between the three characters at will, and the developers showcased some really neat interactions with them in order to traverse various puzzles, as well as defeat enemies.

Check out the rest of the gameplay footage above to see Trine 4: The Nightmare Prince in action, which is shaping up to be quite an amazing return for the series.

Trine 4: The Nightmare Prince will be released on the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC sometime this year.
