Sea of Thieves announced it has exceeded the 10-million player mark. With this many players, Sea of Thieves has reinforced its status as the most successful new IP from Xbox for this generation.

In a statement, Rare Executive Producer Joe Neate shared that this success was "made possible by the support and passion of our fantastic community." He went on to say that for everyone at Rare, the Sea of Thieves community shows the very best of what gaming can be. The game has been home to players from at least 80 different countries and has brought together gamers not only on Xbox One, but also the PC.

This is why, according to Neate, the community is going to be the focus for its Legends of the Seas update. This update is scheduled to release to all players for free beginning on January 15. In celebration of the 10-million player milestone, the update is going to feature two limited-edition gifts: a free custom sail and a special new emote. To get the gifts, players need to log in to Sea of Thieves between January 15 and January 22.

Developed by Rare, Sea of Thieves is an action-adventure game released back in March 2018 for the Xbox One and PC. The game has players take the role of a pirate sailing the seas either solo or as part of a crew of up to four players. The game offers player versus player and co-operative combat. It also includes cross-platform play between Xbox One and Windows.

Upon release, Sea of Thieves received mixed reviews. The game was praised mainly for its gameplay and style. Criticism focused on the repetitive quest design and the lack of content at launch.
