SCP: Pandemic is Going Back to Alpha

A step back.
A step back. Affray Interactive

It looks like additional work is needed for SCP: Pandemic. That’s because the game is reverting from Beta to Alpha status. It’s surprising since it just entered Early Access on Steam.

In a post, developer Affray Interactive revealed that since they launched the game, they’ve gotten a lot of feedback and the issues raised were completely fair. The team assured everyone that this change is “merely a situation of nomenclature” though the current state fits the “Alpha” tag better.

The team did say that once development has improved, they may reconsider going back to the “Beta” label. As a result of this, the in-game text HUD text now simply says “Early Access.”

The game is based on the collaborative writing wiki project titled SCP Foundation. Because of the number of contributors, it’s said that this may be the largest work of collaborative fiction. Basically, it’s about the titular foundation tasked with capturing and containing different paranormal, supernatural, and other mysterious phenomena that can’t be explained by science. At the same time, the foundation makes sure that they remain hidden.

In the game, an entity has infected the human psyche. The SCP Foundation has decided to destroy the human race to beat the entity. Players take on the role of a rogue fireteam working to prevent the foundation from enacting its plan.

Key features of this version include:

  • A semi-linear story where the players are going against the foundation during a containment breach. Experience 1 to 2 hours of story content in the base game.
  • Players get to discover and immerse themselves in the rich story and lore inspired by the SCP-5000 canon. It will be expanded and integrated through ongoing development.
  • Do various actions like peeking corners, breaching doors, and engaging in immersive tactical combat.
  • Experience detailed and fairly extensive weapon customization.
  • Enjoy the audio design with occlusion-based wall muffling.
