On Scandal Season 6, episode 3, which airs at 9 p.m. EST Thursday on ABC, Attorney General David Rosen expands the investigation into the death of president-elect Francisco Vargas. While Nelson McClintock, the sniper who actually shot Vargas, was in custody and being interrogated (he confessed to the crime under intimidation from Jake Ballard), other factors have come into play that suggest someone else order Vargas killed.

Olivia Pope in particular is convinced that Cyrus Beane, who was to be Vargas’ vice president, is the one who ordered him killed. She has told him that she won’t rest until she is able to prove her claim. In the previous episode 2, Olivia’s team uncovered a video of Cyrus and Vargas talking after Vargas discovered an unsettling truth about Cyrus. In Season 5 of Scandal Cyrus encouraged Vargas to run for president and set up a hostage situation to launch Vargas into the public eye. Cyrus hired a gunman to overtake a government building where then-Governor Vargas was working. Despite being shot, Vargas came out the hero in the situation after he apprehended the gunman allowing the other hostages to go free.

Vargas was disgusted when he learned the truth about the situation, according to the video uncovered in episode 2. Olivia will likely use the video as proof that Cyrus is behind Vargas’ death.

An episode 3 sneak peek shows Cyrus being warned by Abby to not go out in public without a disguise because David Rosen was holding a press conference detailing the expansion of the Vargas investigation. Journalists asked Rosen whether Cyrus was being investigated, to which he replied that “anyone and everyone” is being considered. Reporters were already outside of Cyrus’ door.

What will Cyrus do now that he is connected with the death of Francisco Vargas? We will find out in the upcoming Season 6 episode 3, called “Fates Worse Than Death,” which is best viewed on television or live online through ABC Live.

Scandal Season 6 episode 3 premieres at 9 p.m. EST on ABC.
