There's no doubt that Resident Evil has been one of the longest-running and most iconic video game franchises in the history of gaming. The series has evolved greatly, delivering spooky and mindblowing games over the past few decades. The recent entries in the franchise were successful enough to make millions of dollars upon the game's releases.
Up until now, the franchise's best-selling game was Resident Evil 5, which managed to sell 7.7 million copies. However, recent reports state that Resident Evil 7 is now the best-selling game in the franchise. Resident Evil 7 is also Capcom's second best-selling game of all time, sitting behind Monster Hunter World, which has sold a whopping 16.1 million copies.
Resident Evil 7 departed from the previous RE games that feature third-person mode and action-oriented play style. Instead, Resident Evil 7 put players in a first-person perspective. The game also relied heavily on horror elements rather than on action. Even though this was a bold step taken in uncharted territory, Resident Evil 7 turned out to be incredible.
The risk has now paid off quite well, which is also great news for the upcoming Resident Evil 8: Village. Resident Evil 8: Village will certainly capitalize on the same approach, giving fans what they really want. The sequel is set to launch in 2021 on next-gen consoles. Resident Evil 8 takes players to a new location, which is going to be bigger than that of the Baker family's horror house. Players will again assume the role of Ethan Winters and explore a village covered by snow that is infested with new creatures. It also seems that Chris Redfield will be taking the antagonistic role in the game.
Resident Evil 7 was a brave step in reinventing the Resident Evil franchise while pleasing its large fanbase. It is good to see that this brave step paid off quite well.
