You think you’re doing the right thing by Will Mitchell and Danielle Sho in Prey. You think this guy is who he says he is. You think helping another survivor on Talos I is the right thing to do. And that’s how you ended up on this article. You need to finish the Kill the Cook sidequest because you learned the horrible truth: the man you know as Will Mitchell is NOT who he says he is.

He’s the chef imposter you’ve encountered in the kitchen. You’ve taken all the steps to get Mitchell out of his kitchen prison only to find out he’s a bad guy. Or so you think he’s the bad guy. For all you know at this point Yu deserves to get locked in a freezer.

Anyway, the first part of The Cook’s Request mission requires you to kill a telepathic Typhon that’s controlling other survivors. Use the Q-Beam on the Telepath and do your best not to kill the mind-controlled survivors. If they do get close to you, use the Disruptor Stun Gun, which can be found on the bodies of dead security officers or you can take the time to look for one hidden in the Simulation Labs’ debriefing room. It’ll stun the mind-controlled enemies without killing them. It’s a little easier to sneak around and zap the survivors first, especially if you don’t have the health and ammo to go guns blazing.

Assuming you’ve gotten that far, you’ve learned Mitchell is the imposter when you gave him the Macon Noble Chef award from his cabin. From there you helped him repair an item in the kitchen and he rewards you by giving you access to the freezer.

Protip: Quicksave before your next encounter with Mitchell. You will thank yourself later just in case you make a vital error in this particular side quest. Just quicksave in general. Get into the habit or be prepare to lose 20-30 mins of gameplay.

Here’s the important part. Use the Disruptor Stun Gun to knock the fake Mitchell out. On his body you’ll find the kitchen keycard and some neuromods. You can kill him too, but we’re not sure if you’ll need him later on.

If you believed he was a good guy, you walked into the kitchen freezer like an idiot. Don’t panic. You can get out of the freezer. There’s a bloody box in the freezer than contains the real Mitchell’s tracker bracelet. There are two other bodies in the freezer, probably killed by the maniac who just locked you in the freezer. There is maintenance access panel in this room and it’s now your only way out. Use the mimic ability to roll your way out of these. The bad news is, the fake Mitchell will make the rest of your game hell. He will set traps aboard Talos I for you. He is annoying.

Moral of the story: don’t walk into the freezer. Stun or kill Mitchell. Do it for Danielle. Or at least to avoid someone annoyingly taunt you over the loudspeaker. Talos I may look huge but the place is pretty small. If you're looking for the fake Mitchell, he can be found on the Talos 1 Bridge.

'Prey' Xbox One Review: Sci-Fi Done Right
If this is the foundation of a franchise it’s a solid one, but not without room for improvement. Much like its characters, Prey is flawed and a bit two-dimensional, but also utterly captivating.
  • Compelling story
  • Talos 1 features amazing level design
  • Too many game crashes
