Open-World Star Wars Game Releasing Next Year for PC and Next-Gen Consoles

A new adventure awaits you in a galaxy far, far away! Lucasfilm

Something big is coming to the Star Wars universe soon. Ubisoft's Massive Entertainment has partnered with Lucasfilm Games to develop the first-ever open-world Star Wars game called Star Wars Outlaws, it's scheduled for release in 2024 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.

The game takes place between the events of Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back and Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, at a time when the Galactic Empire is in hot pursuit of the final defeat of the Rebel Alliance. The escalating situation has also caused the criminal underworld to thrive.

The story follows the cunning scoundrel Kay Vess (voiced by Humberly González) and her loyal companion Nix (voiced by Dee Bradley Baker). Kay is hoping to start a new life but before that, she has to pull off what could be one of the greatest heists that the Outer Rim has ever seen.

So far, no other information has been made available about this game. However, a gameplay trailer is set to be revealed during the Ubisoft Forward Live later today at 1:00 p.m. EST. You can watch it on Ubisoft's official Twitch channel.

In a statement, Massive Entertainment Creative Director Julian Gerighty revealed that it's been a dream come true for him to have been able to partner with Lucasfilm Games and develop the first-ever open-world Star Wars game. He added that the team at Massive has a long experience in open-world games backed by strong technology. The studio has been responsible for titles like Tom Clancy's The Division, Tom Clancy's The Division 2, and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora. Gerighty went on to say that this is an excellent time to offer an original story that's sure to resonate with Star Wars fans.

There's no question that there's a high expectation on what Star Wars Outlaws will offer upon launch. Recently, there has been an increase in the interest in open-world games, thanks to the success of titles like Dead Island 2, Hogwarts Legacy, and of course, Diablo IV.
