Nintendo has announced the upcoming Nintendo Direct event scheduled for February 17, 2021, at 2 p.m. Pacific Time (UTC-08:00). With the COVID-19 pandemic affecting numerous industries in different ways, this is going to be the first legitimate Nintendo Direct event since September 2019.

Before the announcement, the last actual Nintendo Direct event happened just a few months ago back in December 2020. Despite being called a Nintendo Direct event, the aptly titled Super Nintendo World Direct was a fifteen-minute presentation about Super Nintendo World, the new Nintendo-themed Amusement Park located in many Universal Studios destinations around the world. As such, it didn’t have much to offer the massive Nintendo fan base in terms of video game news and related details.
Fortunately, this time around, it’s going to be a proper Nintendo Direct event and will include about 50 minutes of information on Nintendo games coming in the first half of 2021, with emphasis on Super Smash Bros Ultimate .
Even this late into the first quarter of 2021, there’s still very little knowledge regarding Nintendo’s release schedule this year. So, everybody’s hoping that this event will shed some light on what the famed gaming company has in store for its fans worldwide.
Nintendo Direct began back in 2011, originally just for North America and Japan, but it eventually expanded to include Europe, South Korea, and Australia.
While most companies in the gaming industry look to big conventions like E3 to make their announcements and build hype and excitement over upcoming titles, franchises, and platform updates, Nintendo decided that, as one of the biggest and oldest gaming companies in the world, it deserved its own dedicated event. Thus, Nintendo Direct was born and for the past decade, it has served as one of the most exciting events in the industry.
