The world of retro gaming is set to expand as the Nintendo Switch Online is rumored to be working on its next console and game experience.
It is being rumored that games from either the Nintendo Wii or Nintendo DS will be added to the platform next, but there have been no official confirmations yet regarding this.
Nintendo Switch Online Rumors: Wii or DS Games Are Next
A trusted source on all things Nintendo has shared a new report about the next console systems set to make their debut on the Nintendo Switch Online membership service as its next featured experience.
The report is from Nash Weedle via the "Attack the Backlog" podcast, where he spoke about an interesting scoop regarding which consoles and their games are set to be featured first on Nintendo's online service.
There are two old Nintendo console platforms that are the center of the new rumor, and these are the Nintendo Wii and the Nintendo DS.
Both consoles are icons in the gaming world, with both revolutionizing gaming from the traditional setup of the standard controller.
However, it is important to note that the Nintendo DS was released by the company in 2004, while the Nintendo Wii followed two years later in 2006.
Which Retro Nintendo Console Goes First?
According to the trusted insider, the Nintendo Switch Online will first feature the Nintendo Wii console, but he did not explain why he thinks this will be the case. Moreover, the insider did not share a timeline regarding the Wii's arrival on the Nintendo Switch Online, particularly as it is fairly recent that the GameCube made its way to the service.
That being said, ComicBook Gaming reported that it would make more sense for the Wii to go ahead of the DS because it features the motion capture technology, which the Joy-Cons would have no trouble emulating. The original Joy-Cons already feature gyroscopic technology, and the Switch 2's controllers upgraded it to feature mouse-like controls, making the Wii the ideal next retro console to be emulated.
On the other hand, Nintendo's DS has several potential issues present in it that may be challenging for the Switch or Switch 2 to emulate. First, the dual-screen setup alone would be a challenge for the console in handheld mode to pull off.
Additionally, the DS also requires several actions to be done using its stylus-based touch screen, with other games also integrating it into their mechanics.
