Wargroove Is Coming To The PS4 Soon, Although No Crossplay Available

You have Sony's very restrictive policies to thank for that.

The turn-based strategy game Wargroove is still set to launch for the PlayStation 4. Aside from being delayed after the Xbox One and the Nintendo Switch versions released months ago, it has also been confirmed that the PlayStation 4 edition will not allow cross-play with people on other platforms.

Developer and publisher Chucklefish released an official statement regarding the disappointing news, noting that Wargroove is currently in the “final stages” of content approval for Sony’s platform. The release date should be announced “very soon”.

As for its restriction regarding cross-play, publisher Chucklefish remains mum about the situation and cites “unspecified technological hurdles” as the cause for this restriction. The publisher's recent statements seem more like assurances that Wargroove will provide the same experience on the PlayStation 4 as it did on the Xbox One and Nintendo Switch, such as access to community made content for the game, but playing with friends on another platform is still a no-go.

Sony has long been known for its restrictive position regarding cross-play games allowed on their platform, with popular exceptions including the battle royale shooter Fortnite and vehicle-based soccer game Rocket League. We can only hope Sony will shift their stance with Wargroove.

Wargroove is a turn-based game from Chucklefish, the publisher of hit farming simulator Stardew Valley. Players command an army, customize battlefields and challenge friends in the world’s retro-themed turn-based combat. Set in the Kingdom of Cherrystone, players can choose from a cast of 12 unique characters, each with their own personalities and motivations. Players pick which faction to take up arms for under the flags of four warring factions: Cherrystone Kingdom, Heavensong Empire, Felheim Legio and the Floran Tribes.

Currently enjoying a Very Positive rating on its Steam page, Chucklefish can only hope that the success of Wargroove will still translate on the PlayStation 4 despite its limited cross-play. The final launch date for Wargroove on the PlayStation 4 has yet to be announced.
