Michonne is ready for a fight in The Walking Dead Season 7, whether Rick wants to join her or not.

In a new Q&A post for AMC, Danai Gurira explained why her character Michonne isn’t ready to let go of her control. According to Gurira, Rick and Michonne are at an impasse and she’s unsure how to proceed. Her relationship with Rick has transformed from a friendship to romance, which complicates how she feels.

“She’s at a place where she knows they need to prepare for dealing with [Negan] and she doesn’t want to be defenseless against him again,” Gurira said in the Q&A. “It was a horrible experience to be defenseless and to be caught so off-guard in such a planned and structured way… She’s also dealing with her partner not being in the same place as her and that’s a very difficult place, so she’s having to figure out her own way. She’s definitely in a place that is very new territory because she’s partners with this man who is the leader, but they seem to be at some sort of impasse.”

What’s worse is that Gurira believes the characters haven’t spoken about the possibility of retaliation, let alone how they’re going to live under Negan’s control. This is why Michonne is starting to drift back into her old loner habits.

“Who she used to be starts to creep back in a little, which is a loner making her own decisions and figuring out her own solutions without functioning as a team,”Gurira said. “If she does talk to everybody else and not him, that’s another form of disrespecting his leadership, so the only way is going at this problem alone. It’s very much her reverting, in a sense, back to a part of what’s in her nature and to be a leader in a one-man army.”

Michonne is a dangerous one-man army, which Rick is trying to get under control. The people of Alexandria don’t have an army or weapons. Rick doesn’t know how many people are working for Negan and he doesn’t have his best people with him; Abraham and Glenn are dead, Carol’s missing, Morgan is presumably searching for her, Maggie is sick, Aaron and Sasha are taking care of Maggie, and Daryl is being held hostage. It’s a lose-lose situation, which Michonne doesn’t seem to understand.

But maybe Michonne is onto something. Maybe Rick can’t lead Alexandria in to war, but others can. Maybe Michonne is plotting a way for them to get back at the Saviors. Only one way to find out. Catch The Walking Dead Season 7 on Sundays at 9 p.m. on AMC.
