'T2: Trainspotting 2' Trailer: Twitter? Facebook? Instagram? Do I Still Have To Choose Life?

Of all the oh-so-90s movies to get sequels, Trainspotting is one of the more unexpected. OF COURSE there would be an Independence Day sequel. More Dumb and Dumber? Uh, yeah, okay, if we have to. A Starship Troopers reboot trapped in development hell? I wouldn’t have it any other way (didn’t anyone learn their lesson with Robocop or Total Recall? Paul Verhoeven is unremakeable)! But does anyone remember the heroin adventures of uh, Sickboy and… there was someone else with a ‘boy’ name in there… and hmm…

But here it is anyway, T2: Trainspotting 2. And the first trailer is… pretty intriguing, actually. Sure, voice-over as a storytelling device feels a bit long in the tooth these days, but the combination of original screenwriter John Hodge and original director Danny Boyle suggest we’ll get as close as possible to recapturing whatever magic burns in the veins of the 1996 original.

Worst part: rehashing the “Choose Life” monologue with Twitter, Facebook and Instagram thrown in. Gross.

Here’s the official synopsis:

“First there was an opportunity......then there was a betrayal. Twenty years have gone by. Much has changed but just as much remains the same. Mark Renton (Ewan McGregor) returns to the only place he can ever call home. They are waiting for him: Spud (Ewen Bremner), Sick Boy (Jonny Lee Miller), and Begbie (Robert Carlyle). Other old friends are waiting too: sorrow, loss, joy, vengeance, hatred, friendship, love, longing, fear, regret, diamorphine, self-destruction and mortal danger, they are all lined up to welcome him, ready to join the dance.”

T2: Trainspotting 2 is based on the Irvine Welsh Trainspotting sequel Porno and will be out in theaters on Jan. 27.
