Publisher Electronic Arts and developer Motive Studios have just announced their next title: an air (or more appropriately, space) combat simulator inspired by the Star Wars universe. Titled Star Wars: Squadrons, the game will launch for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC via Steam, Origin, and the Epic Games Store on October 2.

Star Wars: Squadrons will put players in the position of either Imperial or Republic pilots who will battle in the skies to gain supremacy over the galaxy. Players will be able to fly together with their squadron and participate in five-on-five multiplayer dogfights, or take part in much larger monumental battles. Depending on what side you’re on, you can tip the scales in either the Republic or the Empire’s favor. A number of starfighters will be in the game such as the iconic X-Wing, the agile A-wing, and the devastating TIE bomber. Lastly, Squadrons will also feature a single player campaign set near the conclusion of the Galactic Civil War. EA hasn't specified yet, but it seems that players will have options to play for either the Empire or the Republic in the game’s story mode.

Star Wars: Squadrons so far is looking like a breath of fresh air for an Electronic Arts title. The game will support cross-play for all platforms from the beginning, as well as providing VR support for the PlayStation 4 and PC. It also promises a “fully self-contained experience from day one”, wherein all rewards and new components are unlocked through playing and not by paying, which is a step in the right direction compared to the fiasco that was Star Wars Battlefront II at launch. The only iffy thing right now is since Star Wars: Squadrons is really made for the multiplayer experience, exactly how much effort did Motive Studios put towards the single player campaign?

Pre-orders are now available for Star Wars: Squadrons, which will include cosmetics (Flight Suits, Starfighter skins, and decals) for both Empire and Republic Pilots. A gameplay reveal is scheduled during EA Play Live 2020 which will air on June 18 at 4:00 PM EST.

Star Wars: Squadrons will launch for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on October 2.
