Xbox 25th Anniversary Sparks Branding Debate as 'XBOX vs Xbox' Poll Gains Attention

Should it stay in its usual branding, or will the all-caps style elevate its identity?

Xbox is celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2026, marking a major milestone since Microsoft first entered the console market in 2001. Over the past two decades, the Xbox brand has shaped multiple console generations and become one of the most recognizable names in global gaming.

As the brand enters this milestone year, discussions around its identity and future direction are gaining renewed attention.

Xbox CEO Launches Branding Poll

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has sparked conversation among fans after posting a social media poll asking a simple but unexpected question.

Early results show a strong preference for the all-caps "XBOX," which currently leads with around 63% of votes. More than 7,000 users have participated, and the poll remains open until May 14.

Community Debate Over Xbox Direction

Beyond the branding discussion, Xbox continues to face ongoing debate over its expanding multiplatform strategy.

In recent years, Microsoft has brought several formerly exclusive titles to platforms such as PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch, a move that has divided long-time fans.

According to GameSpot, supporters argue the strategy increases accessibility and revenue, while critics believe it weakens the uniqueness of Xbox hardware. Despite the backlash, cross-platform releases reportedly performed strongly in 2025, encouraging Microsoft to continue broader distribution plans.

Hardware Performance and Strategic Challenges

Xbox also reported declining performance in hardware, content, and services during Microsoft's latest financial quarter.

Sharma acknowledged the downturn and emphasized the need for improvement, stating that the company must "earn every player today and into the future."

These challenges come as Xbox continues adjusting its long-term strategy, including leadership changes and increased investment in AI-focused initiatives.

Game Pass and Future Direction Shift

Xbox has also revised its subscription approach, lowering the price of Game Pass Ultimate while removing some benefits, including day-one access to future "Call of Duty" titles.

Recently, Xbox partnered with Discord to bring free Xbox Game Pass to Nitro subscribers.
