A new report is speculating that there may be massive changes coming to "Pokémon Champions" as early as next season, and this could potentially disrupt the balance in the battling game.
The speculations center on The Pokémon Works adopting a new Pokedex format in the game, one that could potentially introduce Legendary Pokémon to join the game and be part of the meta.
'Pokémon Champions' May Disrupt Balance with Legendaries Debut
"Pokémon Champions" launched with a format designed to keep things balanced and easy to enter, allowing players to recruit and train Pokémon quickly. This has cut the time needed to train and build one's team.
However, according to Comic Book Gaming, it is possible that this format could expand in the near future and disrupt the balance for players.
The report highlights concerns over restricted formats in "Pokémon" games' competitive play, similar to what was introduced in "Pokémon Sword and Shield" as well as "Pokémon Scarlet and Violet," which allowed Legendaries to join in.
It was noted by Comic Book that when this happened in previous games, Pokémon like Kyogre, Groudon, Zacian, Calyrex, and more became significant players that made them a must for players to add to their party or counter.
If "Pokémon Champions" follows the same seasonal path, the same scenario could unfold here.
Will Legendary Pokémon Enter Competitive Play Next Season?
According to the report, the next regulation for "Pokémon Champions" is known as Set M-B, and this is expected to be when the devs will add new Pokémon to the competitive game. The report argues that it may still be too early to add Legendary Pokémon to the game's current meta, considering that the game is still in its early stages.
Many players coming into "Pokémon Champions" do not own every Pokémon game from the past decade, and this is one of the top concerns Comic Book has with the adoption of the new format.
It was also highlighted that Legendary Pokémon are often locked behind specific games, DLCs, expansions, and limited-time events in the past, which could bring a disadvantage to players should they become official for competitive play.
"Pokémon Champions" could address this by introducing a way to easily acquire legendary Pokémon via systems or offering standardized competitive rosters.
As of press time, The Pokémon Company has not said anything about how legendaries will be handled in future seasons.
