'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' And 'Episode IX' Spoilers: We're Not Done With Tatooine Yet

Crying again.
Crying again. Lucasfilm

According to Star Wars News Net, between the upcoming Star Wars: The Last Jedi and 2019’s Star Wars: Episode IX, we’ll be revisiting three worlds from previous Star Wars movies: Tatooine, Endor’s forest moon and Mustafar. Tatooine is the desert planet where Anakin Skywalker was born and Luke Skywalker was raised. Endor’s moon is home to the Ewoks and a lot of trees. Mustafar is the lava planet where Obi-Wan Kenobi chopped off Anakin Skywalker’s limbs, forcing him into the iconic Darth Vader suit. But what will these places have to do with the plot of the upcoming Star Wars movies?

We’ve been back to Tatooine several times in the Star Wars Prequel Trilogy; the fate of the galaxy often seems intertangled with Tatooine somehow. But while Star Wars News Net speculates Luke’s Jedi Temple — the one the Knights of Ren destroyed in a Force Awakens flashback — was founded on Tatooine (seems a bit rainy for Tatooine, doesn’t it?), the real reason is mysterious, for now. But if we’re going back to Tatooine in Episode 8 or 9, it probably has something to do with the Skywalkers. Will Luke see the twin suns of his childhood set once more?

Star Wars News Net’s anonymous source may not have revealed where Tatooine fits into the new Star Wars movies, but did give a more concrete answer on Mustafar. Kylo Ren has a journey of discovery ahead of him and spends some time in an upcoming movie visiting some of Darth Vader’s haunts. Could his findings on Endor lead to the need for a Bio-Hexacrypt? He already has Darth Vader’s helmet, burned on the Ewok’s funeral pyre, so it’s hard to imagine what else could be on Endor’s forest moon for Kylo Ren to find. But Mustafar makes more sense. Darth Vader’s castle, first introduced in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, is located on Mustafar. If Kylo Ren is looking for answers from Vader’s past, then his house seems like a good place to start.

But pile speculation atop an unverified rumor and you’ve got one wobbly, vaporous sandwich. It certainly sounds reasonable for Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Star Wars: Episode IX to return to a few classic locations, Tatooine in particular, but what Luke, Rey, Kylo and Finn will get up to is harder to guess. We should have some answers when Star Wars: The Last Jedi comes out in theaters Dec. 15.
