If you’re a fan of the Kingdom Hearts series, then you’ll love this news. Square Enix and Disney have confirmed that Kingdom Hearts IV is currently in development. This was announced during the 20th-anniversary celebration of the franchise.

The anniversary event was held in Tokyo which also featured a live music performance and a showcase of stained-glass artworks. There were also on-stage appearances from Series Director Tetsuya Nomura, Series Composer Yoko Shimomura, and other development members.

Before we continue, watch the announcement trailer below:

Just in case you didn’t have time to watch the trailer, it shows Sora making a triumphant return along with an updated look at the start of an epic new storyline titled “Lost Master Arc.” As Sora faces off against a giant enemy in a boss battle, players are introduced to the Quadratum. This is a large and expansive city set in a realistic world never seen before in the franchise.

Fans should be happy to know that making a return are well-known companions Donald and Goofy. Then, there is also Strelitzia, a mysterious new character who appears before Sora in this rather strange new setting.

In a statement, Kingdom Hearts series Brand Manager Ichiro Hazama shared that they’d like to thank the fans for all the support and can’t wait for them to see what’s to come for Sora.

Meanwhile, Walt Disney Games Director Nana Gadd revealed that Sora is an original Disney video game hero loved by both the team and many fans worldwide. Gadd went on to say that this is but a peek into Sora’s next adventure and that they’ll reveal more when the time is right.

New Mobile Game

The development of a new title in the Kingdom Hearts franchise wasn’t the only announcement made. There’s also an upcoming mobile game called Kingdom Hearts Missing Link. It has players go on an adventure from Scala ad Caelum into the real world. Players can expect a new and original story. The game will be released on Android and iOS, with a closed beta test planned this year.
