All Spider-Man games developed by Insomniac Games have only been single-player experiences. But was it always the plan? Did the developer ever work on a possible multiplayer component? Recent findings suggest so.

The Leak

Twitter user @dniwetamp, known for making mods, found evidence of PvP or co-op mode. The modder discovered a couple of interesting things from the data-mined files of the PC version of Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered.

A code line “If set and in co-op, Characters2 will see this text” hints that Insomniac has worked on some kind of multiplayer component. Other code lines like “Superior_Spider-Man_Winner_Message” suggest that the developer had plans for PvP content where Peter Parker and Miles Morales compete with each other.

This leak could mean a couple of things. First, these lines could be a remnant of a multiplayer mode that was canceled by Insomniac later in development.

Second, many fans believe these files suggest some MP mode in the upcoming Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Even though Insomniac Games has already confirmed that the sequel is a single-player-only experience, game development plans aren’t written in stone. Besides, the reveal trailer was giving me very co-op vibes.

Spider-Man 2 is a perfect title for a co-op game. We do know that the sequel features both Peter Parker and Miles Morales. Imagine you and your buddy swinging across New York and fighting Venom together. I guess time will tell if there is a multiplayer component in the works.

About the Game

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will release sometime in 2023 exclusively for PS5. A PC version hasn’t been confirmed, but given Sony’s recent commitment to the master race, I am sure a PC port is a matter of when and not if.

The original Spider-Man game was released on PC a few days ago, and the spin-off title, Miles Morales, will arrive later this year.
