RIP 'True Detective': Season 3 Probably Not Happening

True Detective has died before it could reach Season Three. Vince Vaughn has been charged with second-degree murder. No, but seriously, HBO’s once-beloved crime anthology has met an untimely end, if the latest comments from HBO’s new boss are to be taken seriously.

Casey Bloys, who was named President of Programming just two days ago, was profiled by The Hollywood Reporter. The article buried the tip-off eight paragraphs in. It reads:

While juggernaut Game of Thrones and the final season of Damon Lindelof's Peabody-winning drama The Leftovers shouldn't require too much of Bloys' time, other decisions, including the fate of True Detective, now fall to him. (HBO sources suggest a new project from creator Nic Pizzolatto is more likely.)

Alas, all good things must come to an end. True Detective Season Two was, quite frankly, terrible, and it’s fate can’t be *too* surprising to viewers. Still, Season One was genius. Genius, I tell you! True Detective’s inception was single-handedly one of the best seasons of television I have ever watched. Fans of the series probably hoped the series could redeem itself, but Mr. Bloys has other plans, apparently.

As for what lies ahead for True Detective creator/writer Nic Pizzolatto -- nobody knows! Not yet, anyway. Some personal advice, Nic: cast Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey in literally every single thing you make for the rest of your life. Surefire way to win some Emmys.

True Detective Season Three arri-- nevermind…
