If you’re looking for a new roguelite RPG, you’ll be glad to know that there’s a new one available for PC. Purgatory Dungeoneer is a lo-fi high-tactics game about plundering a psychic hellmaw to have personal closure. It’s now on Steam for $9.99.

By the way, its alternate title is My Grandpa Died And All He Left Me Was This 1 Dungeon In Purgatory Filled With Nihilistic Adventurers. It’s quite long but it gives you an idea on what the game is all about.

One part of the game is going into and surviving a dungeon to get resources needed to rebuild a town you’ve inherited. Another part is helping retired adventurers that drop by the town and assist in their personal closure. Players take on the role of the mayor of this town, home to a wide cast of former adventurers.

There are more than 400 possible residents with a pool of at least 100 classes. Purgatory Dungeoneer is a tactically deep game about balancing the party to go into the depths of the hellmaw and come back intact. While the game does feature a wide range of skills and abilities, there are no consumable items. That means each attempt at the dungeon needs planning, skill, and a shrewdly judged party configuration so that it succeeds.

Death may not be avoidable but in the game, it’s a minor setback. Each trip to the dungeon results in learning more about the histories, motivations, and emotional baggage that led to a lot of these retired adventures to languish. It’s all up to players to make sure that these adventurers get the closure they desperately need.

If you’re interested in this game, it’s pretty easy to run with its minimum specifications:

  • OS: Windows 7/8/10
  • Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo or better
  • Memory: 4 GB RAM
  • Graphics: OpenGL 4.1 capable GPU
  • DirectX: Version 9.0
  • Storage: 700 MB available space
  • Additional Notes: Game Resolution is 1280 x 720 (16:9)

Purgatory Dungeoneer is being developed by Strange Scaffold. This is the development label of Xalavier Nelson Jr., known for his work on titles like An Airport for Aliens Currently Run by Dogs, Space Warlord Organ Trading Simulator, Hypnospace Outlaw, and SkateBIRD, to name a few.
