Next year, the Mortal Kombat franchise is celebrating its 30th anniversary. A group of fans is once again trying to find a way to develop a remake of the original Mortal Kombat Trilogy for PC and consoles. This version hopes to combine all characters of the first games of the series along with Unlimited Mortal Kombat 3. It also plans to include almost all of the stages from those same games.

To make this happen, Eyeballistic has put up a petition at Change.org and as of this writing, more than 20,000 people have signed out of a targeted 25,000 signatures.

These fans are actually a team from Eyeballistic. The team revealed that they initially approached creator Ed Boon way back in 2016 with a plan to remake the game in HD. While Ed did support the plan, the IP was owned by Warner Bros. The studio back then determined that the game couldn't sell more than 100,000 units and wasn't worth the cost of marketing.

In that same petition, the team shared that they have since grown to be a legitimate game development group and have signed multiple game contracts to develop titles for consoles like Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. In addition, the team revealed that they've even improved their online rollback tech through the use of some proprietary technology.

Should they be allowed to remake the game, the team plans to utilize Epic Online Services to ensure that it supports cross-play between platforms. For the game itself, they hope to recreate almost every detail of the characters and stages in 3D. It goes without saying that what players love is going to be included. That means fatality, brutality, friendship, and even animality. That's not all since all characters and stages will be upgraded to 4K resolution at 60 FPS using Unreal Engine 5. The team plans to remake the music as well.

This new version, should it push through, is planned to be available on Switch, Xbox Series, PS5, and PC. It's projected to cost $39.99, featuring the original trilogy, the standard online matchmaking, and worldwide leaderboards. There's no question that this version is indeed a long time coming.

If you’re excited about this plan, go and sign the petition here.
