There's still a long way to go before we get to see Mortal Kombat 2. The good news is that every now and then, we get glimpses of what's happening or what's being planned. Back in early May, there were stories suggesting that Karl Urban was in talks to play Johnny Cage. Later in that same month, we got confirmation that Tati Gabrielle is playing Jade.
While not exactly an update, Mortal Kombat 2 producer Todd Garner shared a photo on his Twitter account showing some of the cast members in a restaurant during what seems like a break in filming. It shows some of those reprising their roles like Ludi Lin (Liu Kang), Jessica McNamee (Sonya Blade), and Mehcad Brooks (Jax Briggs). Then, there are the new cast members like Tati Gabrielle (Jade), along with Ana Thu Nguyen (Queen Sindel) and Adeline Rudolph (Kitana).
Not all cast members are present though, like Martyn Ford, who'll be playing Shao Kahn. Other cast members reprising their roles, but not in the photo, are Lewis Tan (Cole Young) and Joe Taslim (Sub-Zero).
Here's Johnny!
However, what made fans really excited is seeing Karl Urban in the mix. While there's still no official word out, seeing him already means that there is a high chance that he may indeed be playing Johnny Cage. Plus, since the same photo also shows Karl sporting what seems to be a frost-tipped hairstyle, this has given fans an idea of what his version could be.
The Sequel
Mortal Kombat 2 is a sequel to the Mortal Kombat film released in 2021. The film is still being directed by Simon McQuoid but the screenplay is by Jeremy Slater. In an interview, Slater had mentioned that they plan to give the audience even more fatalities.
New Game
While waiting for the movie, fans can look forward to the release of the new game in the franchise. Mortal Kombat 1 is coming September 19 to PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch. This new title is set to introduce a reborn Mortal Kombat universe created by Fire God Liu Kang and features reimagined versions of iconic characters.
Pre-orders are now open with the game being offered in the Standard Edition ($69.99), Premium Edition ($109.99), and Kollector's Edition ($249.99). Those who pre-order get Shang Tsung as an in-game playable character.
