COVID-19 may be a big hurdle for game development and physical showcase events. However, it hasn't stopped people from buying games. In fact, people are playing more games than ever before as they are stuck at home.
Gamers spent around $3.3 Billion on video games, software, and hardware in the US alone, and that’s only in August. Last year August was at around $2.4 Billion, which means we saw a 37 percent increase this year.
That’s not the only surprising thing. According to the NPD Group, the best-selling game in August was Madden NFL 21 which was followed by EA Sports UFC 4. Both are sports games by EA and both have been critically panned by both critics and fans. Even with all the bad reviews, they are still incredibly profitable for EA.
There are a few more things that we found interesting. The Last of Us Part II is still making good money, but its place has dropped from number four to number 12. Rainbow Six Siege is also on the list, which is surprising as Siege is five years old now.
As of now, Modern Warfare is still ruling the charts. It is the best-selling game of 2020 so far, which is followed by the Nintendo Switch exclusive Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
