We already know that Apple has consistently unveiled its new iPhone devices on the September of every year. Now, renowned Apple speculator Evan Blass (@evleaks) has tweeted a slightly more precise launch window: the upcoming iPhone 7 is expected to unveil on the week starting on Sept. 12.

Via PhoneArena, Apple tends to begin sale of its new iPhone on the Friday following the announcement. While unconfirmed, this suggests the official iPhone 7 release date could be on Sept. 16.

Curiously, Evan Blass refers to the iPhone 7 in his tweet as the iPhone 2016. It was subtle and could have meant nothing, but another tweet from last month raises something interesting:

According to PhoneArena, Apple may opt to use a different name this year due to rumors that suggest the upcoming iPhone does not offer enough major changes from the 6s and 6s Plus to merit a new number. Instead, the new moniker could be "iPhone 6x" to preserve the iPhone 7 designation for the 2017 iPhone.

On the other hand, a leaked image from the Chinese Weibo site earlier this week revealed the alleged iPhone lineup due later this year. An image of the back of the new iPhones reveal an "S" logo, suggesting the new phones could be dubbed the iPhone 7s. But why would Apple skip the standard "7" if speculators don't foresee significant technological leaps in the next phone? Apple may wish to save a "round number" designation for its 2017 iPhone to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Cupertino's game-changing mobile device.

Regardless of what the next iPhone will be called, be sure to stay tuned in the months ahead for the latest info on Apple's flagship smartphone.
