What's happening this August?
What's happening this August? Niantic

It has been an exciting past month in Pokémon Go, but it’s time to move forward and it looks like there’s still a lot happening this August in the poket monster collecting game. There’s the usual August Research Breakthrough encounter and even the Pokémon Spotlight Hours. There are also the Ultra Unlocks along with this month’s Community Day. Today we take a quick look into all of that.

Let’s start with the August Community Day, and if you’ve been following then you know the featured Pokémon is none other than Magikarp. You can read more about that here.

The August Research Breakthrough encounter started last Saturday, August 1 and is going to run through until September 1. During this period, it’s going to be the shedding Pokémon Scraggy that’s available as a Research Breakthrough encounter.

There’s also going to be a Pokémon Spotlight Hour which happens every Tuesday at 6:00 PM local time. This is what Trainers can expect:

  • August 4
    • Spotlight is going to be on Horsea.
    • Trainers get to earn twice the Candy for catching Pokémon.
  • August 11
    • Spotlight is going to be on Sableye.
    • Trainers get to earn twice the Candy for transferring Pokémon.
  • August 18
    • Spotlight is going to be on Venipede.
    • Trainers get to earn twice the XP for evolving Pokémon.
  • August 25
    • Spotlight is going to be on Geodude.
    • Trainers get to earn twice the Stardust for catching Pokémon.

As mentioned previously, there’s three Ultra Unlock events coming. This is a result of Pokémon Go Fest 2020 attendees being able to complete challenges. Here are those events:

  • Dragon Week
    • July 31 – August 7
  • Enigma Week
    • August 7 – August 14
  • Unova Week
    • August 14 – August 21

Update on Go Fest 2020

Niantic announced that there were some technical issues that arose during this year's Pokémon Go festival. In order to address the impact of this particular issue, there’s going to be a global makeup event on August 16 from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM, local time. This is also limited to players who bought a ticket.

During this makeup event, three habitats are going to be featured which are:

  • 11:00 AM – Fire
  • 12:00 PM – Water
  • 1:00 PM – Friendship

For the makeup event, Pokémon featured during the habitat hours mentioned are going to appear in the wild. In addition, Incense is going to be more effective at attracting the featured Pokémon and will last for one hour instead of the usual half hour. There is also a special free box that’s going to offer two Incense and two Remote Raid Passes. In addition, Gifts opened during the event can contain Rare Candies.
