Coronavirus has had a bad effect on several industries, and the gaming industry is no different. Within a few short weeks, we have seen the cancellation of GDC 2020, E3 2020 and multiple gaming tournaments. So, it was only logical that people will be worried if Gamescom 2020 will also be canceled or not. Yesterday, Gamescom's official Twitter page assured fans that the massive event is still going forward, however, they also said plans can change in the future depending on the decisions of the government.

“On 10.03.2020, the city of Cologne banned all major events with more than 1,000 participants up to and including 10.04.202 on the basis of a decree issued by the state government on the same day. Since gamescom takes place at the end of August 2020, we are currently not affected by this decree," the tweet reads. "However, we will of course follow the recommendations of the responsible authorities regarding major events, evaluate them on a daily basis and make our decisions after careful consideration. The preparations for the #gamescom2020 are continuing as planned according to the current status for the determined date.”

People won’t suffer a complete loss if the event is ultimately canceled. Tickets will be reimbursed if they were bought using the official ticket shop, however multiple publishers and visitors will still lose money on hotels, flights, and preparation of their demos. The risk will only increase as we get closer to the event date. Gamescom 2020 is important as previous gaming events have been canceled and publishers are looking for an event to showcase their products.

It’s not all bad news though, as the virus is expected to die down during the summer and Gamescom 2020 will occur at the end of August. So there is a better chance that the event will go forward. If Gamescom were to be canceled, then we still have PAX West to hope for this year.
