Cersei Lannister is brutal, but she’s not very good at thinking long term. This will probably be her downfall in Game of Thrones Season 7.

SPOILER WARNING! If you’re not caught up in Game of Thrones Season 7 episode 4 stop reading now.

Cersei thought she could just roll up to High Garden and take Lady Olenna’s money like it was just another day in Westeros. Cersei probably thought, “Kill that old hag and take her money. Will use the crossbow to kill a Dragon, nbd.” And you know what, it’s not a terrible plan. If only things in life were that simple.

Jaime Lannister did not anticipate Daenerys Targaryen would ambush his army. Ambush isn’t even strong enough in this case because she rolled up on a Drogon with what looked like thousands of Dothraki riders. Jaime was optimistic they could at least delay the Dothraki from reaching King’s Landing... until he saw Drogon.

Forget whether Jaime is alive or not; that’s not important here. What is important is if Daenerys managed to keep the gold from getting to King’s Landing. If Dany kept the gold from Cersei, than she’s severely hurt her plans. If Dany didn’t accomplish this, then we know the real reason why Dany will need to go North.

Dany is down the financial support of the Tyrells and Dorne’s army. The Unsullied and the Dothraki are great fighters, but they still aren’t enough to take down Cersei, especially with Euron Greyjoy commanding her ships. If Dany wants to take the Iron Throne, she’ll need the men from the North more than ever.

Cersei will learn that the giant crossbow barely pierced Drogon’s scale. She’ll have her best researchers looking into how to kill Dany’s dragons if they gold made it’s way to King’s Landing. Having Cersei financially equipped to handle Dany does level the playing field and present more challenges on getting the Iron Throne.

One of the obvious challenges would be Jaime’s death. The episode ends with Jaime getting knocked into the water by Dickon Tarly. Jaime foolishly tried to attack Daenerys as she was trying to remove the bolt out of Drogon’s scales. Drogon, of course, spotted Jaime and breathed fire his way. Good thing for Jaime that Dickon was watching his back. We don’t know if Jaime’s alive or dead. If he’s dead, Cersei will have no one around who truly loves her. She’ll have no one to counsel her against being cruel and try to tame the beast within.

However, we doubt Jaime’s dead. If he dies, there will be no pay of to Lady Olenna’s epic death scene in episode 3. At most, Jaime will be missing in action for a bit, and return to kill Cersei once she’s fully embraced being the Mad Queen.
