Barry will go into the speed force in The Flash Season 3 episode 16. Last week, Wally was sucked into the speed force and Savitar was freed. The two speedsters switched places, which was Savitar’s plan all along, diverting Barry’s attention with the threat of Iris’ death.

Barry should have learned by now there are consequences for acting like the god of speed (pun intended). His actions are why Iris’ life is at stake, it’s why Cisco’s brother is dead, why Caitlin Snow is becoming Killer Frost, why Wally’s life has turned upside down and why Savitar wants to wage a war. However, according to series star Grant Gustin, Barry will take responsibility for his actions in “Into the Speed Force.”

“He’s willing to make the ultimate sacrifice when he enters the Speed Force,” Gustin told Entertainment Weekly. “Barry is willing and wants to stay and replace Wally in the Speed Force forever. He thinks it’s what he deserves, to spend the rest of eternity in the Speed Force.”

Barry will face ghosts of his past in “Into the Speed Force.” Those old faces include Eddie Thawne, Ronnie Raymond, Captain Cold, a Time Wraith and Grodd. But in the extended promo, we also see a hand in a black leather suit grabbing Barry’s hand as he pleads, “Please.” The leather-costumed hand looks like Black Flash from Legends. If it is, the chances Barry and Wally will make it out unharmed are not looking good.

“Someone always has to be trapped in the Speed Force prison. So the question in that episode becomes: Is Barry going to sacrifice himself for Wally, and how are they going to get Wally out?” Executive Producer Andrew Kreisberg teased.

The good news is Barry may get a little help from Jay Garrick. The Golden Age speedster tells Barry in the promo, “Not every marathon has a finish line.” This is right after we hear a gunshot and see blood dripping onto the floor, though…
