Netflix dropped a surprise today that’s sure to delight Dota 2 fans. The streaming platform has partnered with Valve to release an anime based on the MOBA. Titled as “Dragon’s Blood,” fans should immediately know what the story is all about. It’s not going to be a long wait since the series is dropping on March 25.

You can watch the teaser here:

Dota 2 Lore

By now, you probably know that it’s about the hero Davion, also known as Dragon Knight. In Dota 2 lore, Davion was on the hunt for an eldwurm, a legendary race of dragons. To his disappointment, however, he met Slyrak, a dragon that was in its twilight years. Knowing that there was no honor in killing a creature in such a weakened state, Davion started to walk away to let the dragon die in peace.

But Slyrak begged him for an honorable death which was through combat. Davion agreed and as he sank his blade in the dragon, Slyrak managed to put its claws on his throat. Their blood mixed and gave the dragon’s strength and wisdom to Davion, making him the Dragon Knight.

Netflix Anime

So what does the Netflix anime have to offer? From the synopsis , it seems that it could be an origin story. There’s a promised encounter with an ancient eldwurm and even an appearance from Princess Mirana. Of course, there’s the larger story that’s behind everything.

The anime is said to be handled by Studio MIR, the same studio that worked on The Legend of Korra, Young Justice: Outsiders, and Voltron: Legendary Defender.

Initial reaction to Valve's announcement of the show on Twitter has received somewhat mixed reactions. It seems though that some pro teams are positive on it with OG even replying with “Hell yes.”

It’s still too early to know if it’s going to be a good show or not but for sure, Dota 2 fans are more than willing to give it a chance. The release date is also good for both fans and players since it’s just days before the Singapore Major begins.

What do you think? Is Dragon Knight’s story a good way to introduce the game to non-players?
