The official launch of Gears 5 is getting pretty close, although a good number of players have already started diving into the game thanks to the existence of Xbox Game Pass. So far, Gears 5 is showing some huge potential despite the few bumps along the way. But if there is one thing that has caused so much confusion it is microtransactions.

Sure, the game is still in its infancy and probably why multiplayer functionality and server issues tend to arise. Interestingly, the developers are taking note of these in order to ensure that everything is stable and working. Microtransactions in particular have been the topic in every discussion lately. Considering the fact that the game comes with two types of currency, it is really easy to get confused by how these things work.

The first type of currency is called Scrap, although the system that was introduced back in the fourth Gears installment has been removed. In other words, duplicates acquired through Supply Drops are automatically converted into Scrap. Although it can be used to upgrade character skills or construct cosmetic items, you cannot buy Scrap with real money.

Iron, on the other hand, is deemed the premium currency in Gears 5. And unlike Scrap, Iron can be bought using real money. Although you can earn Iron through minimal amounts of play, you can also buy it from the game’s digital store (starts at 500 Iron for $4.99).

Being a premium currency, you can use Iron to buy cosmetic items from the store including character skins, weapon skins, emotes, and sprays, among many others. Keep in mind that these items are not available in Supply Drops. Plus, the premium currency can be used to purchase Boosts, which gives you double XP for a certain amount of time.

Furthermore, the season battle pass of Gears 5 reportedly comes in the form of Tour of Duty, which is surprisingly free to all players. By ranking up through this and completing all various challenges, you will be able to obtain various cosmetic items. You can also earn Iron, but it will definitely take a lot of your time, especially since each new season will come with new content and challenges.
