The Civilization 6 team has dropped a gameplay bombshell many suspected was coming: the confirmation that civilizations will have more than one leader. The first beneficiary of this second leader is Greece, who in addition to Pericles will also have the option of Queen Gorgo of Sparta. Wife of King Leonidas, she is remembered as “a wise politician and a capable ruler.”

Gorgo gets everything Greece gets: the Acropolis unique district, the Hoplyte unique unit, and Greece’s unique civ ability, Plato’s Republic. The Greeks get an extra wildcard slot no matter which government they use, while the Hoplyte gets a bonus when other Hoplites are adjacent. The Acropolis replaces the Theater District and gets higher culture adjacency bonuses for being next to districts, especially the city center, but must be built on a hill.
Queen Gorgo’s unique leader ability provides culture whenever her forces defeat an enemy unit. This means you can take Greek’s strengths in a more aggressive direction than you might choose to do with Pericles . When Gorgo goes to war, eliminating the entire enemy army ensures you get the most out of her leader ability. Wars of liberation and other casus belli will be important in later years.
