The Mario Kart series may have started the genre, but a new game wants to set a competitive stage. This is the upcoming Chocobo GP, and yes, it’s kart racing set in the Chocobo universe coming in 2022.

It goes without saying that the basic gameplay is much like Mario Kart. However, in this one, players get to choose a character from the Final Fantasy series. The courses are also based on locations from various Final Fantasy games, such as Alexandria in Final Fantasy 9 and Golden Saucer in Final Fantasy 7.

Some of the exciting features include:

  • Various game modes
    • Choose different modes, like Story and Custom Races.
  • Enjoy exciting survival races in a bracket-style tournament
    • These races can support as many as 64 players.
    • Selected modes support online and/or local multiplayer.
  • Thrilling courses
    • Race through different various courses inspired by the Chocobo and Final Fantasy series.
    • In addition to what’s already mentioned, there are also the likes of Cid’s Test Track and Zozo and the Gold Saucer.
  • Roster of Beloved Characters
    • Choose from a wide range of Chocobo series characters.
  • Magical Magicite
    • Collect magicite found within Magic Eggs scattered around various tracks.
    • Grabbing these imbue racers with magic like Aero and Fire.
    • This can be used against other racers to give them a competitive edge.

The game is actually a sequel to Chocobo Racing, released in 1999 on PlayStation. When it was released, the game didn’t really catch on with many reviews stating that it was trying to just get its hands on the kart racer genre.

A sequel was originally revealed back in 2010 and planned to be launched on the Nintendo 3DS. Possibly because the development was outsourced, its quality wasn’t up to par and was eventually canceled in 2013.

For this upcoming game, the reception has so far been good with a lot of comments on the announcement trailer hoping for the game to succeed. There are also those who say that they have been waiting for this sequel for years.

Do you think it can compete against Mario Kart?
