Assassin’s Creed Origins ’ Curse Of The Pharaohs DLC is set to release March 13 across Xbox One, PS4 and PC. Thanks to announcements from Ubisoft News as well as recent impressions from Eurogamer and GamesRadar, here’s everything we know about the expansion’s story, gameplay and expected length.

THE STORY BEHIND CURSE OF THE PHARAOHS

The upcoming DLC takes Bayek to Thebes, where he intends to locate a mysterious artifact before the Order Of The Ancients can take advantage of it. When he arrives, he discovers that the bodies of undead pharaohs have animated and are killing innocent people. So, once again, the Magi is faced with the overwhelming task to bring peace and stability to a region in distress.

GAMEPLAY IN THE AFTERLIFE

In terms of the main gameplay loop, then, Bayek must calm the spirits of restless rulers by entering into their afterlives. That means he must find an object connected to each pharaoh, enter their tomb and pass through the guarded portal within. Each afterlife is themed around specific mechanics based on the ruler you’ve chosen to encounter. NPCs, mounts and side quests can be found here too. While in the afterlife, Bayek’s abilities grow stronger over time.

That being said, the zombie threat doesn’t go away once these maps are finished. Players will also receive periodic notifications when a pharaoh has left their tomb to enter the land of the living. When that happens, Bayek must engage in a boss fight before an unseen timer runs out. Failing the task sends the zombie back to its resting place, but success guarantees access to special loot.

Given its stark departure from the history of ancient Egypt, Curse Of The Pharaohs takes Bayek on a journey to encounter some pretty marvelous things like giant scorpions, ghostly sailing ships and mythical birds with human heads. These creatures, called Bâ, contain an individual’s personality once they’ve passed into the afterlife. Killing enough enemies offers something called Shards Of A Star.

THE FINER DETAILS

Here are a few specifics about collectibles and gameplay length:

  • The expansion contains about 25 hours of content, but your mileage may vary based on how much you’d like to complete.
  • The expansion includes new outfits and equipment.
  • The expansion has seven new abilities, four of which are archer-related. Dash Boost offers a damage boost for perfect dodges, and Overpowered Fury heals Bayek every time he performs an overpowered attack. Archer abilities infect Predator Bow arrows with flesh decay and yield more damage with consecutive shots from a Light Bow.
  • The level cap is raised to 55.

That’s all we know for now, but we’ll likely have more impressions as the Curse Of The Pharaohs release date inches closer.

Assassin’s Creed Origins is available now on Xbox One, PS4 and PC. Curse Of The Pharaohs releases March 13 as a season pass item or $19.99 purchase.
