The upcoming "007 First Light" game from IO Interactive is well underway, and developers are now teasing who will be the next Bond villain to give the young MI6 spy problems and challenges early in his career.
The "James Bond" franchise has long given the world a series of iconic villains and characters to look out for, and in its original story video game adaptation, the renowned protagonist is bound to face off with a new sinister figure.
Bond villains have made a name for themselves over the years as its film adaptations shone the spotlight on different icons over various eras, with each one having a specific goal or need that affects the peace and safety of the world.
'007 First Light's' Bond Villain Teased by Devs
A recent interview by Rolling Stone with IO Interactive's CEO, Hakan Abrak, has shed light on who will be the next Bond villain to debut in the upcoming action RPG feature game "007 First Light." There were no explicit mentions or snippets of who the next villain would be, but Abrak mentioned during the interview that it would center on a name that was mentioned in the trailer.
In the game's reveal trailer, another agent's name was mentioned apart from the iconic designation of James Bond, 007. It was mentioned by the CEO that the other agent's designation, 009, was referred to in an "antagonistic way" and brought the notion of the roles that double-O agents play in the story, hinting that this specific yet nameless agent is the upcoming adversary.
This specific plot has already been used in previous film adaptations of the famed franchise, hailing from Sir Ian Fleming's James Bond novels, focusing on the story of an agent gone rogue. Abrak revealed that "betrayal in the world of spies is a thing," providing further hints that the next Bond villain would be a former or current double-O agent, someone who the main character knows.
That being said, Abrak did not explicitly reveal or confirm that this nameless agent, who is only referred to as "009," is the main villain of the upcoming game, but this character is one to look out for, said the CEO.
Will the Next Bond Villain Be a Familiar One?
In the film series, there was only one mention of the agent known as 009, and it was in the 2015 movie "Spectre," with Q claiming that the Aston Martin DB10 car was meant for him and not for 007. There were no mentions of the character here going rogue or in other future installments of the film franchise until the Daniel Craig era ended in "No Time to Die."
As of writing, there are still no other mentions or appearances of Agent 009 in other movies or from the novel series, which means that this is a new character is a fairly new one that will debut in the game.
That being said, previous James Bond movies already saw a plot where an agent is the villain, particularly in the 1995 film "Goldeneye," starring Pierce Brosnan as Bond, which saw Agent 006 fight against the titular character.
