Doom 2016 was a very optimized game, and even on below-average PCs one could easily reach 60 fps. This was thanks to id Software's id Tech 6 engine, which helped the developer achieve this feat. However, the developer seems to be offering a similar experience in Doom Eternal, which is going to be running on the updated id Tech 7 engine.

The developers at id said that if you've got the right hardware, you can run Doom Eternal at 4K and a whopping 1000fps.

In a recent interview with IGN, the lead engine programmer for id Software, Billy Kahn, explained that with the major improvements to id Tech 7, the developers were able to get “bigger explosions” and more “vibrant-looking particle effects” in Doom Eternal, all while maintaining a pretty high framerate. “If you have the hardware right, it could hit 1,000 frames per second,” Kahn said.

Kahn also added that Doom Eternal does not have any upper limits. “I’ve had some hardware here locally that we built just for testing, where we had scenes running in the 400 frames per second," he said. Considering that id Tech 6 could only manage up to 250 fps, id Tech 7 seems to be a major improvement.

One of the biggest advantages of such an engine is that the game has been futureproofed for years to come. This means you can run this game on future hardware, pushing it to the highest frame rate possible. “It will scale with the hardware that you have,” Kahn added. “All the way from very old hardware all the way to the newest that may not even be on the market”.

This is the kind of scalability every PC game should aim for. This means every time you upgrade your hardware, the performance boost should be noticeable.

Kahn said that the improvements made to id Tech 7 will be very much noticeable on the current-gen consoles, but he was more excited for the next-gen consoles as he added "id Tech 7 will run really nicely on the next-gen platforms“

Doom Eternal is set to launch on PC, PS4, and Xbox One on March 20. So, are you ready to open the gates of hell?
