What's coming in Nether? Mojang

Minecraft released its Nether Update Beta last week, which added a whole heaping scoop of new things. There are new mobs, new biomes, and even a new material, which could be the toughest one yet.

Before we look into what these new features are, remember that this is only a beta. It remains a work in progress and can be unstable. In addition, players that decide to try out the beta won't be able to have access to Realms or even join non-beta players. Learn more about how to join the beta here.

BIOMES

Let's start with biomes. Nether is going to offer new areas for players to explore. These are:

  • Warped Forest
    • Warped nylium carpets the cave floor with all kinds of strange new vegetation.
    • Huge warped fungi make up the "trees" of this forest, with Shroomlights lighting up the forest floor.
    • A dark blue fog covers the forest.
    • Warped spores swirl through the air.
    • Endermen wander these forests.
    • The warped forests are strange, but also the least hostile place in the Nether.
  • Crimson Forest
    • Crimson nylium carpets the cave floor with all kinds of strange new vegetation.
    • Huge crimson fungi make up the "trees" of this forest, with Shroomlights lighting up the forest floor.
    • Weeping vines grow from the cave ceilings and huge fungi canopies.
    • Hoglins, Piglins, and Zombified Piglins wander these forests.
    • Crimson spores swirl through the air.
  • Soulsand Valley
    • An open space made mostly of soul sand and soul soil.
    • Basalt pillars span from floor to ceiling.
    • Ash falls through the air.
    • A light blue glow envelopes the valley.
    • Beware of skeletons here

MOBS

For mobs, players need to look out for Piglins. These are half-pig and half-whatever that hang around the crimson forest. They tend to attack players on sight, but if you have the right outfit then they may hold off and may even barter with you. Piglins tend to be distracted by gold items. Be careful when opening a chest or even mining a block of gold. Nearby Piglins may think you're stealing and could catch you unaware.

A more aggressive mob you need to watch out for are the Hoglins. Also living in the crimson forests, these one are aggressive enough to attack players on sight. If you think you're tough enough to take them on, they do drop pork, so that's quite a good reward. You can also breed them, though there's always the risk of them attacking you.

MATERIAL

Finally we go to the new material. Dubbed as Netherite, this high level materials can be used to upgrade diamond gear. Here are some features of this new material:

  • Netherite items float in lava.
  • Netherite items have higher enchantment value than diamond though not as high as gold.
  • Netherite tools work faster and last longer than diamond.
  • Netherite weapons do more damage than diamond.
  • Netherite armor has higher toughness and durability than diamond.
  • Netherite armor gives you knockback resistance.
  • Netherite blocks can be used as the base of a beacon.
  • Netherite ingots can be used as the fuel for a beacon.
